OverviewUnited Friends Group Homes provides long-term residential services to persons having medically diagnosed disabilities attributable to mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism, or epilepsy. A charitable non-profit corporation established for the purpose of providing group home living for developmentally disabled persons in the greater Seattle area, our program provides a family atmosphere in which each resident can participate as an active member of a household. Individualized programs are designed to maximize skills in personal care, community survival, leisure time activities, and interpersonal relationships. Trained staff supervise the programs and activities. Residents participate in year-round educational programs, sheltered workshops, community integration programs, or in community employment when possible. United Friends originated with an advocacy organization called United Friends of The Retarded, a women's group who were mothers of disabled children. This group recognized that their children were growing up and would have no place to live as adults. They initiated a fund raising effort by conducting a Bingo game and other activities and were able to incorporate to be able to qualify to apply for financial support under Referendum 29 in Washington State. UFGH’s first group home was built in 1978 in the Crown Hill community and is designed to serve six residents. The second group home located in the Beverly Park area opened in 1980 and accommodates eight residents. In 1987 we completed our third home in the Lincoln Park neighborhood which also serves eight residents. All of our homes are designed and built specifically to meet the needs of the developmentally disabled. Staff at each home are available to residents 24 hours a day. Working to ensure a pleasant family atmosphere, staff interact with residents as a group and individually to enhance and improve their lives through education, training, and positive support. Completed in 1978, Crown Hill Group Home is located in northwest Seattle. The house, a tri-level structure, provides a pleasant living atmosphere for six residents and two live-in Staff.
Beverly Park Group Home was completed in 1980 and is located southwest of Seattle near Burien. This house is a single level structure designed to accommodate the physically disabled, providing a homelike setting for eight residents and two live-in house parents. Lincoln Park Group Home, Located in West Seattle, was completed in 1987 . It too, is denned to meet the needs of the physically disabled. Eight residents live at this home with 24 hour care. The Endowment Fund is skillfully managed by a volunteer Board of Governors which is separate and apart from UFGH’s Board of Directors.
